Fratelli d’Italia

Sunday, July 11th, 2010

I’ve recently made this 4-page comic for a competition regarding the upcoming 150th anniversary of the unity of Italy. The deadline has been postponed by the organizers to the 31st of July, so there’s still time to take part in the competition. Here’s the link.

My contribution is called “The Great Boyg”, and is taken from the famous Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen’s play “Peer Gynt”. The Boyg is a creature from Norwegian folklore, and usually takes the shape of a giant serpent blocking a traveler’s way. In “Peer Gynt” the boyg has as a ghostly, shape-shifting nature, and represents more of a psychological hindrance to the protagonist.

Ibsen spent many years in Italy, and wrote his best work there. In 1867 “Peer Gynt” was first released. This is also the year that Ibsen left Rome and Italy, at least partly because of the rumors that Guiseppe Garibaldi (a man Ibsen supported) was marching towards the city. Rome was not part of Italy at that time, it was controlled by the French. Although Garibaldi’s campaign against Rome didn’t work out as planned (he was stopped along the way), he is regarded as one of the most important individuals of the unification of Italy, and liberated many parts of the country.

In my comic the two events of Ibsen writing “Peer Gynt” and Garibaldi marching to Rome, clash into one story.

Back from Fumetto

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

I really enjoyed this years Fumetto-festival. Especially the great exhibitions. My favorites were Nicolas Mahler (AT), of course, with his new book “Engelmann”, the Jack Kirby exhibiton, Brecht Evens (BE) (look out for this guy in the future) and Souther Salazar (US). I met cartoonists from all over Europe and America, and visited Strapazin in Zürich. My comic “Junction stories” was exhibited in the “Kornschütte” in the centre of the old part of Luzern. I got to see a really cool “Totentanz” there as well, I think it was from the 17th century. Except for the Swiss beer, which to my surprise I don’t like very much, it was an enjoyable and inspiring weekend at the Fumetto festival.

Nano – act II

Yep, that’s right! I’ve started on the second act of the story about everyone’s favorite space dad. I’m publishing the first episode here as a teaser.

Junction stories #1

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

This is my contribution to the Fumetto-competition in Luzern, Switzerland this year. It’s deals with a certain point in the lives of five people, and how they all affect each other in different ways. This is visualized by a labyrinth or web of storylines where the intersections are the junctions referred to in the title. The junctions occur when the different characters meet each other, and the story then takes a different turn. I’m planning to expand on this topic, hence the #1 in the title. Nano

Monday, March 1st, 2010

Nano is a kind of sci-fi parody told entirely through images. It’s a story about a father searching for his son, who is kidnapped by aliens and taken into outer space. Admittedly, the story ends rather mysteriously, but I’m likely to continue this project… The pages you can see here won me the first price in the NoWords Comics-competition in Bolzano, Italy, November 2009.
